On-Street Bicycle Facilities in Dallas' Transportation Future

Bicycling along North Texas’ growing network of trails is a popular way to enjoy spring. Dallas’ Katy Trail is packed with cyclists, walkers and runners throughout the year. And the work is under way to improve bicycle connectivity throughout the city of Dallas and all of the North Texas region.

The implementation of the 2011 Dallas Bike Plan will improve accessibility and facility options for bicyclists in Dallas and into surrounding jurisdictions. The 2011 Dallas Bike Plan examines the need for on- and off-street bicycle facilities within the city, and provides guidelines for the locations and proper installation of the facilities.

One of the vision elements of the plan is to promote “a bicycling culture which promotes bicycling as a viable transportation option that is part of a comprehensive, city-sponsored strategy to revitalize neighborhoods and improve public health and air quality.” This would further reinforce the importance of bicycling as a form of transportation and the role it plays in improving air quality in the city of Dallas and the North Texas region.

The plan seeks to improve connectivity; introduce the concept of “Complete Streets,” which identifies roadway facilities for all users including bicyclists, pedestrians, transit, motor vehicles and freight that are sensitive to their land-use and transportation context; implement facilities that will define the future Bikeway System Network; and promote education and safety for bicyclists and motorists.

This spring, the Dallas City Council is expected to adopt the plan, which is recommending more than 500 miles of on-street bicycle facilities to be implemented throughout the city. The plan prioritizes projects that provide access to transit, employment centers and universities. A combination of bicycle lanes, shared lane markings, climbing lanes, cycle tracks, buffered bike lanes and paved shoulders are being recommended in the plan. Several demonstration projects are slated for implementation in 2011 if the city council approves the plan this spring. These demonstration projects are intended to build momentum for the plan and gauge the community’s acceptance of the facilities.

Dallas and other cities in the region have installed hundreds of miles of off-street multi-use trails that provide the community the opportunity to use non-motorized forms of transportation and help improve the overall quality of life in North Texas. The on-street facilities being recommended in the 2011 Dallas Bike Plan were developed to provide access to the existing and planned off-street facilities with the intent of providing a cohesive Bikeway System Network that will provide access to all areas in the city and to every adjacent jurisdiction by non-motorized forms of transportation.

Publications Explain Aviation's Importance to North Texas


The North Central Texas Council of Governments Transportation Department has developed materials to help the public better understand aviation and its role in the region’s economy.

Two publications and a series of videos will be used to spread the word about all facets of general aviation and the need for an educated workforce that can lead the industry into the next generation.

Preserving General Aviation in North Texas is a pamphlet explaining general aviation and related compatible land-use issues such as aircraft noise exposure and residential encroachment. People can minimize the effects of noise in several ways, especially when deciding where to live. The brochure also discusses how the aviation community is addressing noise concerns created by noisy aircraft and airports.

General aviation is also the latest subject of the Regional Mobility Initiatives series, a collection of topic-specific reports highlighting projects and programs undertaken by the North Central Texas Council of Governments as the region’s metropolitan planning organization. The General Aviation Regional Mobility Initiative includes information about aviation’s value to the community, its economic benefits and an examination of technological advancements that could shape the future.

The Transportation Department also remains focused on using other communication methods to reach both current and potential partners. A video highlighting the impact of aviation on the Dallas-Fort Worth area was released in conjunction with the publications.

How would you improve transportation?

However you commute – by car, train, bus or bike – you probably have opinions on improving the region’s transportation system. The North Central Texas Council of Governments is developing plans for enhancing how we get around this increasingly crowded metropolitan area. To have a conversation about current issues requires participation from both the agency and the public.

The NCTCOG Transportation Department invites you to participate in the conversation through one of the traditional channels of communication or social media. The department has a presence on Facebook and Twitter and would like to hear from residents about their experiences and what they think of programs and projects being undertaken to improve transportation and air quality.
