Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Planning Organization 40th Anniversary

The North Central Texas Council of Governments is celebrating its 40th anniversary as the region’s metropolitan planning organization.

Throughout 2014, the Transportation Department will look back at some historic events and accomplishments that shaped the region.

This month, the focus is on transportation options and how multiple modes form a comprehensive, flexible transportation system.

Aviation in 1974

The Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Airport opened for commercial service on January 13, 1974, at a cost of $700 million. The name change to Dallas/Fort Worth International did not occur until 1985.

Average domestic roundtrip US airfare with fees (excluding taxes) was $186.72 in 1979, but had increased to $378.62 by 2012.
